To have a dark mode or not, now that’s the question.

Fans on both factions have their reasons to believe that they are on the right side of the argument but oh well, we all know we are doing it for the vibes!

But let’s just take a break and ponder for a second; does this debate has any deeper meaning? We’ll discuss this by putting forward all facts below and leave it for you to decide, so let’s just keep reading.

Who created dark mode?
Why everyone is switching to dark mode?
& most importantly, really though;

What is dark mode?

All these questions need answers and we are here for it…

Dark mode has a long history which goes way back in the 1970s. You can read here for more details.
In recent past, this phenomenon of dark mode took over the digital industry when Android and Apple came up with the first update of Dark Mode in 2019.

Then the era of dark mode and lit memes started, but here the question arises; why everyone is switching to dark mode?

The dark mode is undoubtedly one of the most favourite interface feature of vast majority users these days, in both Android and iOS.

Let’s have a look at stats to get a clear picture of the hype;

Dark Mode iOS
An overwhelming majority of 80% user like to have a dark mode theme in iOS and Mac.

Dark Mode Android
Around 82% of users prefer dark mode in Android.

So, what is dark mode? This light-on-dark colour scheme is often called night mode or dark mode. When enabled, this turns your interface and design into a dark theme by changing icons, background and text colour scheme.
Right now, a bunch of apps and numerous websites are offering their users a dark mode option.

The YouTube dark mode, dark mode on chrome, Instagram dark mode, Facebook messenger dark mode and twitter dark mode is popular among users these days.

How is Dark Mode better?

What makes it so popular? Why everyone is switching to dark mode? And developers might like to ask; is Dark Mode really worth it? We’ll try to answer all these questions by listing down its possible advantages;

  • Dark Mode is negative contrast polarity and it’s popular because it’s cooler. (yeah we are a fan too, surprise surprise)
  • If you have sensitive eyes that hurt in bright light, it will help you in your screen usage.
  • If you are going to use a screen for long hours, it will help prevent dry eyes issue.
  • Dark mode tone down the eye strain.
  • It helps you save your battery life.
  • If you are working at night, the dark mode does not disturb your sleep as much as light mode does.

Having a dark mode and light mode option available in any site or app simply means the user has a freedom to choose according to his needs, which is not a bad thing to have if you ask me!

How is Light Mode better?

There are people who prefer light mode. (Yeah, I know!)
The light mode is usually the default mode and is called positive contrast polarity. The Light Mode is the dark-font text on a light coloured background and this includes icons, images and text.

There are still a significant number of people who prefer white mode.
Let’s have a look at their side of the argument,

  • If you have a normal vision, you might prefer the white mode.
  • Dark mode does not support usage in a certain type of tasks, and it really hurts to look at dark background especially at day time.
  • White mode or light mode are supportive for reading and get you better performance.
  • If you have long reading assignments light mode will help you since pupil contracts more and your eyes are relaxed.
  • It is hard to concentrate with dark mode so the light mode is preferred in such tasks.
  • If you are preferring dark mode over light mode just due to battery timing then you should know that it does not work if you have an LCD screen, whether its mobile screen. Laptop or a Tablet.

Dark mode vs. Light mode: You do you

We’ve put up our case for both dark mode and light mode.
They have their plus sides and negative impacts. But even in the end, we can’t say for sure which one is better since it’s your call depending on your usage.

So do as you please. Really, it’s up to you.
